Cute girl's room

I found these pictures of a cute yet sophisticated ten year old girl's room on one of the blogs I follow.  I love the rug and bedding from Anthropologie, the blue Farrow and Ball paint color, and most of all the white Pottery Barn frames filled with illustrations done by the little girl herself.  To find out more about this room transformation go to:

Open floor totes

Yesterday I was helping a friend pick out a new rug at Celadon, a local store here in Mt. Pleasant.  While there I spotted these adorable canvas open floor totes.  I think they would look great in a child's room designated as a place to house stuffed animals.  These days I am totally into open storage and have found that closed boxes (with the exception of maybe a big toy box or chest) do not work for us.  Having something open really facilitates easy clean up.  Just throw it in and be done.

Front facing bookcases

I love the idea of front facing bookcases in a child's room because they add great color and also make it easier for a little one to select a book.  These two I found on the oohdeedoh website and were done at low cost with either picture ledges (above) or lumber and red paint from Home Depot (below).  I think it is a great way to take up wall space and these kind of shelves have a more uncluttered look than traditional ones.

Bright colors

The other day I found these great materials at a local fabric shop.  What a great color combination for a little girl's room.  I would love to see it used in a room painted the color of the blue stripe.

Boys' rooms

Having two boys of my own, I am particularly interested in ideas for decorating a boy's room.  I found these pictures on the Young House Love blog.  They are taken from a home in Sydney, Australia owned by the founders of  Murchison-Hume, an  eco line of cleaning products that are carried here in the states by shops like Anthropologie.  I love the paint color in the first room and have never thought about using that shade of blue in a boy's room.  I think it looks fantastic with red accents!  Also, the extremely organized shelves are great.  I love how the toys are accessible and stored in the straw baskets.  Unfortunately we don't have IKEA where we live, but this is where the shelving unit was bought.  The nautical accents are a nice touch and look great with the paint color.  And, of course I am a big fan of the maps and globe.  The second boy's room is neat too.  I love the khaki/taupe color of the walls mixed with golden yellow accents, the interesting variety of art, maps, and photos, on the wall.  The sophisticated monogrammed pillow is a nice touch.

Decorating with maps and globes

I love the idea of decorating with maps and globes.  My son has had a map of the United States above his bed since he was two.  He loves looking at all the states, pointing out where his friends were born, where relatives live, and where he has been.  I have been looking on EBAY for a vintage globe to put in his room not only because they make a colorful addition, but because of the conversations it can start.  He and I share a fascination for world geography.  A friend of mine's son, who is in fifth grade, received a globe for a Christmas present and she says he has to use it constantly for homework assignments.  This makes me think that I should get a "current" globe, but the vintage ones have lots more character.  Some people collect world globes and I've seen pictures in decorating magazines of them arranged together to make a colorful display as the one above which I found on the website lovelydesign.com.  The photo below is from one of my favorite blogs Chez Larsson (chezlarsson.com), and it was taken in the blogger's fifteen-year-old son's room, and the last photo is from my five-year-old's room.  The map I purchased for him is from the Land of Nod.

Little Girl's Bedroom Idea

If I had a little girl, I would be all over this bedding. I just love the crisp white linens and the colorful pillows. This combo would look great with almost any color paint on the wall. This picture was taken at Celadon, a local store which is having a 20% off on everything sale through the weekend.
